I know we have just had a ride (and what a wee gem that was) and that this is very late notice, but tomorrow, Tuesday, 1 May, all cyclists (that’s us!) have been invited to ride in support of a petition. . . The petition calls for the red zoned land around the Avon-Otakaro to be made into a massive Park.
The two hand-bound volumes of the petition has been signed by more than 18,500 Christchurch people. It will be carried up the Avon River to its Avonhead source, then to the airport. On Wednesday the petition will be delivered to Parliament.
Support the petition’s journey!
There are 2 options:
- 1:30pm at Little Hagley Park (western end by the Fendalton Rd bridge) and/or
- 2:15pm at Okeover Gardens in Ilam Road (park your bike on the campus before coming into the garden).
If you prefer to walk,
- meet at the Peace Bell, Botanic Gardens at 12:30pm
- and/or Crosbie Park, Avonhead at 3pm.
If you’re coming please let the Avon-Otakaro Network know by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Maps of the all the routes and exchange points are posted on http://www.avon.org.nz . More details attached.
The Avon River red zone to become a reserve and river park? How cool is that!?
If this happens it will be a real walking and cycling mecca, as well as a beautiful place for birds, bugs and fish to live and trees galore to breathe life back into our air. And a fitting tribute to all our neighbours who have lost or are loosing their homes there.
Thanks, Meg (who, all going to plan, intends to do the 1.30pm stint).
