Frocks on bikes rides and news for October

Hi Everyone
An cycle-action packed Labour Weekend is coming your way- see newsletter for details! .
The Brooklands October Feature Ride on Labour Day Monday will be led by Matt. This is a ride of intriguing contrasts: the lovely spring growth along the scenic River Styx, and the oddly beautiful desolation of the former Brooklands township. Once a thriving rural community, Brooklands is now little more than deteriorating driveways leading into vacant paddocks but a few houses live on.
The ride starts at Spencer Park, then takes a short jaunt through some grass along the River before re-joining the Lower Styx Road to Brooklands. We’ll wander through the deserted streets and admire the lagoon before heading back.
There will be two choices back: a direct route to Spencer Park the way we came, and a longer route that winds through Kainga and briefly joins the Main North Road before turning back along Spencerville Road.
The short option will take about an hour; the longer version more like an hour and forty minutes.
Connie has kindly offered to give a little talk about her work monitoring the River Styx for ecological health, which should be very interesting.
Also, too big to fit into our newsletter, is an invitation to be part of an e-biking and health study.
As usual, if you have an idea for a ride, let us know. Better still, why not offer to lead a ride? Meg, Matt, Catherine and Connie

Frocks on Bikes ride today is cancelled

Hi Everyone
The weather does not look very promising so we’ll postpone this ride, perhaps repeating the trip out to Halswell’s monthly market to the last Sunday in October. I’ll pop out to Riccarton House at 11.30 anyway…
Meg

Reminder about rides tomorrow

Hi Everyone
I do hope plenty of you are able to come along for our ride out to the Halswell Market this weekend.
Don’t forget Daylight Saving kicks in on Sunday so our 11.30am start from Riccarton House is 10.30am old time! You still get a sleep in but an hour less chilling out in your pjs 🙂 Meg
If you or someone you know wants to join in with a short ride for beginners, let Connie know 021 027 70250. The ride is at 2pm from where ICECYCles is having it’s free bike fix up- at the Linwood Community Arts Center cnr Stanmore and Worchester Streets. Connie

Reminder: Atalanta Memorial Ride 12pm Sunday

Hi Everyone
Sunday looks fine after a grotty Saturday- just perfect for our Kate Sheppard Memorial Ride. Back in Kate’s day, women got hassled for riding bikes and wearing unlady-like attire. So the dress code for Sunday’s ride is… whatever you feel like! See you Sunday

Rides for August

Dear Frockstars
I am delighted to bring you August’s Frocks newsletter prepared by Alex and Allan, two Canterbury University students. This is part of an assessed mini-internship and I’m sure you’ll agree that they have done a mighty fine job. They’ve found some really nice cycle–friendly events and rides for us, given the newsletter a bit of a face lift, and have planned and will lead something a little different for the end of the month. Top marks!

Meg, with co-pilots Alex and Allan
PS. Last Sunday’s ride to Little River was a great success- a longish day and real challenge for some. Well done everyone who took part. As a consequence one rider, who hadn’t been on her bike since Christmas time, has now booked her and her husband to do the West Coast Trail

Frocks on Rail Trail this Sunday 31 July

Good Morning, Frocks on Bikes

Four days out and the weather looks like it will be reasonably kind to us for our intrepid Little River Rail Trail ride. No rain and the ride is ON! The challenging side wind across the lagoon (a sou’ wester) will turn to our advantage when it blows us from behind beside Lake Forsyth, if metvew.com is to believed.
Please confirm with me 027 8486 927 if you need a ride back to your car from Little River. Also, please get in contact if you want a ride out to the start of the trail, wherever you intend to start. Two vehicles leave our place in Beckenham at 9am – there are 3 places left for people and bikes.
Here are maps for the various meeting points (attached as far as I can make out!). The times are approximate and I would expect us to be late rather than early… Don’t forget a good jacket it might be a tad chilly.

Yours, Meg
