Last 12 days of Biketober

Dear Frockstars
A big THANK YOU for those of you who were able to help out with the bike valeting last Sunday. It earned Go Cycle Christchurch $1300, some of which will be on-donated to another cycling project in Christchurch.
This is the last shout out for Biketober, and a final plug for the National Bike Expo. This 2-day consumer show brings together all kinds of biking: commuting, family, recreational, touring, e-biking and sports. It’s a place to come for inspiration and a place to equip yourself with the gear and the advice to make your next journey, whether it’s across New Zealand or to the local shops. This is the ideal event to bring your family to: there will be a kid’s zone for the 1-10 year olds so mums and dads are free to browse. NZ Bike Expo will have 3 trial areas outside on the airfield and runway: a kid’s track, an off-road demo track, and the 1km runway route for testing e-bikes and road cycles and a full programme of speakers and races throughout both days.
On the 2nd page is the calendar of events for the last 12 days of Biketober, starting with the bike breakfasts tomorrow morning ? Meg and Connie
If you are at a loose end this labor Day, then come along for the 3 in 1 ride Frocks ride, and meet a special guest with a special message

Biketober event continues apace, Labour Day ride

Dear Frocks on Bikers
I hope you managed to get to one of the Biketober Go by Bike Breakfasts this morning. Connie was handing out free coffees at Hagley’s Armagh Street Gate, Meg was serving up free smoothies at the Antigua Boatshed Bridge and we haven’t heard from the Edgeware team to see how their breakfast went yet. It’s so encouraging seeing so many people loving their early morning commute ? Studies have shown that people on bikes are the happiest of all commuters.
So much to say, so little space. This is October #2 newsletter, and we’ll have another one out before the end of Biketober.
Did you know that frockers can buy 2 for 1 tickets to the NZ Bike Expo on 28 & 29 October by using the code BIKETOBER2829? But only up to 16 October. Also don’t forget your Biketober Passport, and the chance to win some cool prizes at the BikeExpo. You can pick up passports at participating shops or at City of Cycles on Sunday 15 October. Details about this on page 2 of your newsletter, or just google Biketober Christchurch.
If anyone fancies a muddy entry-level mtb ride, come along to Hansen Park at 5pm tonight, Tuesday. If hills are your thing, then Leisa is providing a free skills training session at 10am Wednesday 11 Oct meeting at Victoria Park. Yah the grotty weather is over for now.
As always, let us know if you no longer need or want these emails. We won’t take offence! Happy Biketober riding everyone
Meg and Connie

Call for volunteers

Dear Frockers.
Attached is advanced notification about our two feature rides during October.
But more importantly, check out the flip side of the newsletter regarding the call for valet volunteers for a Heritage Week event on 15 October. We need to have 8 volunteers for this fun activity sorted out in the next 2 weeks!
Sadly, yet again, we have not scheduled a ride through and under the magnificent display of cherry blossom along Harper Avenue on the north side of Hagley Park. We seriously recommend that you have a ride or walk along there in the next couple of weeks. Send us a picture of you, your bike and the blossom and it may be featured in our next newsletter and facebook page! As always, happy riding.
Meg and Connie
ps, The meetup.com cycling tourist group rode our ill-fated Little River Rail Trail the weekend after we had to cancel. Apparently the track was pretty muddy and squishy, but worse, the lake flies were really out in force. A sign of “warmer” and wetter winters, perhaps? I think we dodged a bullet, people! So if we ride this next year, it could be July again, or even June.

Rail trail ride is not on tomorrow

Hi Everyone
I’m sorry to have to report that the ride is not on tomorrow. Julie, one of our frockers rode it last weekend and told me that it was pretty mucky. So after Monday’s repeat downpour I imagine it will be a quagmire again. It looks like there will be low cloud, a high of only 11 degrees and a reasonably brisk south/souwest wind: so not the greatest of conditions!
I hope you enjoy your Sunday doing other stuff. At this stage we’re not planning another Rail trail Ride for a while. This ride has loads of lake flies in spring and can be awfully windy and/or hot in the summer months, so its not total madness that we have scheduled a ride in August, the last of the winter months!
Stand by for a deluge of Frocker activity in October, there’s nothing scheduled for September at this stage unless something crops up. As always, if you have an idea for a ride, please let Connie or me know Meg?.

Updating the status of Sunday’s Rail Trail Ride

Hi Everyone
I’ve had a bit of correspondence from people wondering whether our Little River Rail Trail ride is going ahead. Well…not only is the weather for Sunday extremely changeable, there seems to be little agreement between different local forecast websites! So I will send a ‘it’s on” or “it’s off” message out late on Saturday afternoon, as planned.
Assuming we go ahead, so far we have 8 people for up to 10 places in our 2 vehicles coming back from Little River. The next 2 people to book their place gets them! Fingers crossed
Meg

Frocks on Bikes August Newsletter

Everyone
Here’s our August newsletter with details about our Little River Rail Trail day out. For those who don’t wish to ride the full 30km from Taitapu, the alternative meeting point at Motokarara at 10.45am where Frocker Tania will be waiting. The plan is for the Taitapu riders to get there by 10.45am but, who knows, we may be delayed by 5-10 minutes.
Thanks to the four of you who have got in touch requesting a ride back. Any more? Please let me know meg.christie@cdhb.health.nz or 027 8486927 and I will get a 2nd or 3rd vehicle. Also,, if you know of someone who can help with shuttling, let me know!
Don’t forget to scroll down for more upcoming cycling events and opportunities. We’ll post more exciting details about Biketober as they get confirmed. Meg
